Acupuncture for Acne

Can Acupuncture Improve Your Skin?

Experts will attest that acupuncture can improve your skin by reducing redness, stimulating collagen production and help to regulate your hormones. In a general sense, acupuncture involves needles and is derived from Chinese medicine practices. This ancient practice is actually more complex that most people realize.

Acupuncture is a practice from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which uses extremely small needles to help regulate energy flow, reduce inflammation, improve pain, aid in chronic conditions and regulate hormones. While studies often debate and contradict the effectiveness of TCM, acupuncture is widely used. Based on one study conducted, almost a quarter of Americans visited an acupuncturist within the last month.

How Does Acupuncture Affect Skin Health?

When acupunctured needles are placed, they create tiny traumas in the skin which stimulates the production of collagen. For people struggling with cystic acne, the practitioner will not apply needles anywhere near an active breakouts. The placement of tiny needles throughout specific points on the body helps in treating the underlying causes of breakouts.

When we consider how acupuncture affects patients internally, it helps regulate hormones and soothe irritated gut lining. These areas both play an important role in our skin health. On the outside, acupuncture is able to reduce redness, improve cystic acne and improve moisture in dry skin.

Additionally, acupuncture can reduce redness and inflammation, even out skin tones and stimulate healing. When we consider cosmetic acupuncture, it can help to reduce fine lines, wrinkles and puffiness.

Who Is The Right Candidate For Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an excellent solution for the skin but can also help patients who are looking to improve their energy, sleep, mood, digestion and more. Acupuncture is for everyone no matter what symptoms you are experiencing. A common treatment plan includes weekly sessions for six weeks which is then followed by monthly sessions for maintenance. For people using acupuncture to treat acne or another hormone-related condition, the acupuncturist may recommend starting with weekly treatments for eight weeks due to typical hormone cycles.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

During the initial consultation, patients will be asked about their overall health, diet, skin issues, health concerns and the accupuncturist will check your tongue. Each patient is evaluated and treated individually. There is no “one size fits all” method. It is common for acupuncture to be administered along with other treatment components such as an improved diet, herbs and supplements.

During the acupuncture treatment, tiny needles are placed in various locations throughout your body and can include shoulders, legs, hands, head and feet. The needles used are so small that patients can rarely feel them. The acupuncturist will work to ensure the experience is relaxing and comfortable by adjusting the lights, room temperature and playing music. It is often so comfortable that people fall asleep during their session.

One important thing to consider it that acupuncture isn’t a quick fix. It can take multiple treatments before patients may experience noticeable improvements. In addition, for patients who experience chronic skin issues, be sure to consult with a dermatologist or visit your doctor for an assessment. Often times, acupuncture can be a critical component used alongside with other solutions for a successful treatment.
